Spring 2011

HAPPY SPRING!

It’s been a busy year at Drs. Liesen and Pinzl.  This, of course, includes continuing education, which is important to us!

We had Susanne Morris, from the U of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention, come to our Woodruff Office for a full staff meeting, which included both our Woodruff and Park Falls staff.  She spoke with us about the Tobacco Quit Line and ways to support people with their effort to quit using tobacco products.  Susanne gave us many tools and resources to pass on about research, insurance coverage for those that want to quit and The Quit Line, which gives 2 weeks of FREE medication to callers.  For more info: 1-800-QUIT-NOW (784-8669) or www.wiquitline.org  or www.ctri.wisc.edu

We also attended, as a complete staff, a seminar on “EMERGENCY MEDICINE” basic management protocol for medical emergencies in the dental office, by Dr. Stanley Malamed.  It was held at Lambeau Field Atrium on NFC Championship weekend -  how exciting that was!  But, the Packers aside, we learned valuable information to handle emergencies.  He gave us insight on what signs to watch for in our patients and how to notice and react before it becomes a full blown situation.  Dr. Malamed described signs and symptoms of respiratory distress, allergic reactions, heart attack, stroke, seizures and, of course, fainting.

Basic Life Support (CPR) being THE single most important step in management of ALL medical emergencies, Dr. Malamed strongly recommended ALL staff, not just the doctors, be certified in CPR.

Everyone in our staff is certified in CPR.  We have an instructor come to our office to train us!  We also have the emergency drugs and equipment recommended; epi, inhaler, aspirin, oxygen and an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). So we feel prepared for medical emergencies.

Hope to see you soon! Call for an appointment or with any questions.

Grin & Bear It...For Oral Health

Importance of Brushing Teeth Properly

You have been brushing your teeth most of your life, but are you really brushing properly?  Daily cleaning is not only important for a healthy mouth, but for your overall health.  Studies have shown links between gun disease and heart disease, diabetes and other immune system conditions.  To help prevent gum disease from the start you need to brush properly.

  • Need to brush long enough.  Recommended brushing at least 2 minutes -- spending 30 seconds in each "quadrant" of your mouth.

  • Reach every tooth as well as every tooth surface...don't forget the back of the last molars!

  • Don't forget to brush your tongue!  It harbors a lot of bacteria.

So make the extra effort to make sure it's done right for maximum effect and for your health!

Drs. Liesen & Pinzl -- Park Falls Dentistry FAQ

Q.  Which is better:  a POWER or MANUAL toothbrush?

A.  Studies have shown that most people DO NOT brush their teeth efficiently, due to improper brushing technique and NOT brushing long enough.  The power brushes were found to remove more plaque and bacteria, 94% more.  But, yes, you will still need to FLOSS!  Power toothbrushes are also more beneficial if you lack manual dexterity, have braces or implants and a brushing habit that causes recession or have periodontal disease.  Children love power toothbrushes and they are safe for them.

*We sell the ORAL-B Smart Series 5000 at a discounted price from retail stores.  The Smart Series 5000 includes a quadrant timer, which encourages you to brush the full 2 minutes and a built-in pressure sensor that lights up and stops spinning when too much pressure is applied.  It has different brushing modes; daily cleaning, sensitive, massage and whitening.  Also included with the brush are 4 different brush head options; Floss Action (helps clean hard to reach places), Sensitive (extra soft bristles), Power Tip (designed to clean around bridges, crowns and implants) and Ortho (ideal for use with braces).
